5. Upset Forging

Upset forging increases the diameter of the workpiece by compressing its length. Based on number of pieces produced this is the most widely used forging process. A few examples of common parts produced using the upset forging process are engine valves, couplings, bolts, screws, and other fasteners. Upset forging is usually done in special high-speed machines called crank presses, but upsetting can also be done in a vertical crank press or a hydraulic press. The machines are usually set up to work in the horizontal plane, to facilitate the quick exchange of workpieces from one station to the next. The initial workpiece is usually wire or rod, but some machines can accept bars up to 25 cm (9.8 in) in diameter and a capacity of over 1000 tons. The standard upsetting machine employs split dies that contain multiple cavities. Last time i bought some bearings from a local supplier the old boy who worked there said he had done research in a previous job into bearings in similar applications to suspension i.e applications where the bearing never does a full rotation and the conclusion was that within reason any bearing will perform the same. The only difference comes from better sealing from the elements in a bike application. He seemed to think that bushings were the best option on bikes as you dont get a point load which in hindsight is what full sussers used to use and bearings kits were an "upgrade". Interestingly I don't remember ever having a problem with bushings.

Y-bearings in the YSA 2-2FK series have an inner ring extended on both sides and a tapered bore (taper 1:12) enabling them to be mounted on standard adapter sleeves in the H 23 series. The appropriate adapter sleeve is not part of the bearing and must be ordered separately. Y-bearings of this type are delivered exclusively with the rugged standard "Superagriseal" fitted with additional plain sheet steel flingers. The outer ring has two lubrication holes as standard. Mounting onto an adapter sleeve enables the bearings to operate at higher speeds, run more smoothly in applications where the direction of rotation is constant or alternating. The SKF range, which comprises bearings with bore diameter from 25 to 65 mm, fits adapter sleeves in the H 23 series for metric shafts ranging from 20 to 60 mm. These bearings can also be used on adapter sleeves in the HA 23, HE 23 and HS 23 series for inch shafts ranging from 3/4 to 2 3/8 inch diameter.
