3. Upset Forging
Upset forging increases the diameter of the workpiece by compressing its length. Based on number of pieces produced this is the most widely used forging process. A few examples of common parts produced using the upset forging process are engine valves, couplings, bolts, screws, and other fasteners. Upset forging is usually done in special high-speed machines called crank presses, but upsetting can also be done in a vertical crank press or a hydraulic press. The machines are usually set up to work in the horizontal plane, to facilitate the quick exchange of workpieces from one station to the next. The initial workpiece is usually wire or rod, but some machines can accept bars up to 25 cm (9.8 in) in diameter and a capacity of over 1000 tons. The standard upsetting machine employs split dies that contain multiple cavities. The dies open enough to allow the workpiece to move from one cavity to the next; the dies then close and the heading tool, or ram, then moves longitudinally against the bar, upsetting it into the cavity. If all of the cavities are utilized on every cycle then a finished part will be produced with every cycle, which makes this process advantageous for mass production.

4. Drop Forging
Drop forging is a metal shaping process, the metal to be formed is first heated then shaped by forcing it into the contours of a die, this force can be in excess of 2000 tons. The drop forging process can be performed with the material at various temperatures. Hot Forging: During hot forging the metals are heated to above their recrystallization temperature. The main benefit of this hot forging is that work hardening is prevented due to the recrystallization of the metal as it begins to cool. Cold Forging: Cold Forging is generally performed with metal at room temperature below the the recrystallization temperature. Cold forging typically work hardens the metal. There are two types of drop forging, open die and closed die. Open die drop forging requires the operator to position the work piece while it is impacted by the ram. The die attached to the ram is usually flat or of a simple contour, most of the shaping is achieved by the operator physically positioning the work piece before each stroke of the ram. There are also special dies which can be used to cut the metal, form holes or notches.

Before you check your bearings, consult your owner's manual or dealership to find out whether the bearings on your vehicle are sealed. If they are, you can't repack them. If you have drum brakes: It's important to check the bearings when you check your brakes to make sure that the grease hasn't become fouled. If it has, the particles act abrasively to wear away the very connection the bearings are designed to protect, and the result is a noisy, grinding ride. In extreme cases, you could even lose the wheel! If the bearings look cruddy, either repack them yourself or get a professional to do it. If you have disc brakes: You have to remove the caliper to get at the bearings. Although this task isn't terribly difficult, certain aspects of the job can create problems for a beginner. Because your brake system can kill you if it isn't assembled properly, you might want to do the job under supervision at an auto class.

Open-die forging is also known as smith forging. In open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. But if your bearings have gone, the inner drum will move a lot in relation to the outer tub. So here we have the front bearing, the rear bearing and the bearing seal, and they come as a complete set for this Bosch machine. You may find that for your make and model you do need to buy them separately, but do buy all three as we want to replace the lot. We also have a tub seal in this set, because we going to need to remove the whole tub, split it in two and when we put that back together again it's important that we put a new seal on so that it's nice and water-tight. Now this is a big job, not for the feint hearted , you are going to need a little bit of space to work in, but it's going to save you a fortune compared with buying a new machine or calling out an engineer. Safety first, make sure you are unplugged from the mains. So let's get on with removing the tub from the machine.

Much closer to pure rolling can be achieved in a tapered roller bearing and this avoids rapid wear. The rollers are guided by a flange on the inner ring. This stops the rollers from sliding out at high speed due to their momentum. The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing can sustain. Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the cone, and the outer ring is called the cup. Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup.

Spherical plain bearings and rod ends are produced in various designs and with various combinations of sliding contact surfaces. Each design and combination has characteristic properties which make it particularly suitable for certain applications. To select a certain bearing type and to establish the requisite bearing size, the main factors which have to be considered are the loads, the load carrying capacity of the bearing and the expected service life. The same is true when selecting a rod end. Selection of bearing type. The choice of the appropriate type of bearing (radial, angular contact or thrust) is determined by the direction of the load which will act on the bearing, while the choice of the appropriate sliding contact surface combination is primarily determined by the way in which the load acts (constant or alternating direction). Radial load: When the load is purely or predominantly radial, a radial spherical plain bearing should be selected. These bearings can accommodate a certain amount of axial load in addition to the radial load. Axial load: When the load is purely or predominantly axial then the choice should be a spherical plain thrust bearing. These bearings can accommodate a certain proportion of radial load in addition to the axial load.

Sealed bearings. A selection of SKF spherical roller bearings is also produced in a sealed version with contact seals on both sides. The seals are reinforced with sheet steel and made of an oil and wear-resistant: acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), designation suffix 2CS; hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), designation suffix 2CS5; fluoro rubber (FKM), designation suffix 2CS2. The seals are inserted in recesses in the outer ring. For smaller bearing sizes, the seals are pressed into the recesses while the seals for the larger sizes are held in position by means of retaining rings (fig). The seals have two sealing lips contacting the lead-in at the sides of the inner ring raceway, to provide efficient sealing. Sealed bearings are lubricated as standard with an extreme pressure bearing grease according to table 1. They should not be heated to temperatures above 80°C during mounting, and should not be washed. Sealed bearings do not need to be relubricated when the operating temperature does not exceed 70°C and the rotational speed is below 50% of the limiting speed listed in the product table. When temperature and/or speeds are high, relubrication with a similar grease with lithium thickener is recommended. In this case the polymer band, which covers the lubrication holes in the outer ring must be removed before mounting. Note that only a small amount of grease is needed to relubricate sealed bearings. The grease should be pressed in slowly through the lubrication holes in the outer ring while the bearing is rotating. Excessive pressure should be avoided so as not to damage the seals. The internal design of a sealed bearing corresponds to that of an open bearing. The external dimensions are also the same except for bearings based on the 222 and 223 series. These bearings are slightly wider and carry the series designation BS2-22 and BS2-23 respectively. Sealed bearings are available with a cylindrical bore as standard. However most bearings in the BS2-22 series are available with a tapered bore as well. Every sealed bearing can be supplied with a tapered bore to special order. To prevent interference with the seal, the diameter of the shaft abutment should not exceed damax at least for the 1 to 2 mm closest to the bearing. If the bearings are secured axially on the shaft by a lock nut, SKF recommends using a KMFE lock nut or to position an intermediate ring between the bearing and the lock nut.
